If you believe that “a drawing is a line going for a walk,”* then you might also believe that a detournement is a picture (or an object) taken on an abrupt detour into precisely the wrong territory. A strange territory, maybe hostile, but the important thing is that the picture will never be the same. *BTW lots of people think Paul Klee said this, which he didn’t exactly, but that might be another definition of the detournement: a very bad paraphrase.
